There are places you visit and there are places that claim a piece of your soul. For me, that place has always been Hydra.

The Arrival | A Symphony of Silence

The moment the ferry rounds the rocky edges of the Saronic Gulf and the amphitheater of the port comes into view, something shifts within. It is not just the sight of the grey stone mansions rising defiantly against the deep blue, but it is the immediate and almost startling transition into silence. As you step onto the quay, the frantic noise of the modern world simply evaporates. There are no engines here, no sirens, and no screeching tires. Instead, there is a rhythmic and ancient soundtrack consisting of the click-clack of hooves on cobblestones, the distant tolling of a church bell and the gentle lapping of the sea against the wooden hulls of the water taxis.

To arrive in Hydra is to surrender to a different pace of life. It is one of the few places on earth where time does not just slow down but seems to pause entirely, allowing you to breathe in sync with the maritime soul of the island.

The Aesthetic | A Fortress of Elegance

Hydra’s beauty is not soft. It is architectural and proud. The island is defined by its grand mansions built by eighteenth-century sea captains. These are structures of stone and soul, with heavy wooden doors that guard secrets of a glorious naval past and high-walled courtyards where the scent of jasmine is so thick it feels like a physical embrace.

Walking through the backstreets is a lesson in high aesthetics. You see it in the marble stairs worn smooth by centuries of use, in the vibrant bougainvillea that spills over whitewashed walls like liquid fuchsia and in the way the sunlight casts sharp and poetic shadows across the narrow alleys. Every corner is a curated frame and every door a gateway to another century. Hydra does not try to be beautiful… it simply is!

The Echoes of a Bohemian Glamour

As you wander deeper into the labyrinth of its narrow streets, you realize that Hydra is a place haunted in the most beautiful way by the ghosts of its glorious past. There is a lingering magic in the air and a sense that around the next corner you might just catch a glimpse of Leonard Cohen climbing the stone steps toward his house, guitar in hand, chasing the “Bird on the Wire.”

This is the island that seduced the world’s elite long before travel became a global industry. It was the playground of Sophia Loren during the filming of Boy on a Dolphin, the retreat of Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis and the bohemian sanctuary for the visionaries of the sixties and seventies. They did not come for the spectacle. They came for the seclusion and the sharp intellectual clarity that only this rock provides.

What is truly remarkable about Hydra is how it manages to carry this legacy into the present without losing its soul. It remains a destination for the “few” who understand that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. It is no coincidence that even today the most prestigious names in luxury travel still bow to its allure. For instance, the Four Seasons Yachts have curated Hydra as a key destination in their exclusive Mediterranean itineraries. This is a profound testament to the island’s enduring status as a place where a donkey ride and a multi-million dollar yacht coexist in perfect and effortless harmony. Hydra does not follow trends because it remains the timeless benchmark of the “New Greek Lifestyle”, acting as a magnet for those who seek the authentic glamour of a bygone era reimagined for today.

Surrendering to the Energy

People often ask me why I return to Hydra so obsessively. It is difficult to put into words because the connection is visceral. There is an overwhelming energy here and a vibrational frequency that feels as though it has existed since the dawn of time.

For me, this island is the ultimate sanctuary for the mind. In the chaos of a busy life, Hydra is the only place that manages to silence the internal noise. It forces you to be present. When I am here, I find myself not thinking about the next deadline or the next project, but instead I simply surrender to the stillness. It is a place of profound peace where the living past meets the vibrant present, allowing you to drift into a state of pure and unadulterated tranquility. I return because this place exerts a staggering energy upon me, making it feel as though I was always meant to be here.

Where to Stay

To truly experience the soul of Hydra, your choice of stay must reflect the island’s heritage. In my personal edit, I have selected two retreats that represent the two distinct faces of Hydriot luxury.

1. Cotommate Hydra 1810: A Dialogue with History

The first is Cotommate Hydra 1810, which is located just a few minutes’ walk from the vibrant port. This is more than a boutique hotel. It is a journey back to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Housed in a meticulously restored captain’s mansion, staying here feels like being a guest in a noble home of a bygone era. The high ceilings, the antique furnishings and the traditional stone walls create an atmosphere of maritime nobility

Waking up in a room that breathes history, you feel the weight and the grace of the past. The internal courtyard is shaded and serene, providing the perfect spot for a slow breakfast where the only thing on your schedule is deciding which alley to explore next. It is the epitome of quiet luxury that is sophisticated, authentic and deeply rooted in the island’s DNA.

2. Mandraki Beach Resort: Where History Meets the Sea

My second recommendation is the Mandraki Beach Resort, where history meets the sea in a spectacular way. For those who crave the touch of salt on their skin from the moment they wake, this resort is an unparalleled destination. It is located in the historic area of Mandraki, which served as the island’s old naval shipyard. The resort is housed in a stunning historic stone building that has been transformed into a sanctuary of modern elegance.

It is the only place on the island where you can wake up, walk a few steps across a private beach and dive into the crystal-clear water before you even have your first coffee. The experience of having breakfast by the sea with the sun rising over the Peloponnesian coast in the distance is a ritual of rebirth. It successfully combines the architectural integrity of Hydra with the effortless allure of a beachside retreat.

The Rituals | Living the Island

Hydra is essentially a place of rituals and to live it as I do, you must embrace the small and poetic moments that define the day.

The Dawn Ritual: There is nothing quite like the port of Hydra at seven-eight in the morning when the world is still asleep. The light is soft and silver and the only people awake are the fishermen untangling their nets and the shopkeepers receiving their supplies from the mules. This is when the island is at its most raw and beautiful. Finding a small table at a cafe on the quay and ordering a traditional Greek coffee while watching the island wake up is a moment of pure meditative clarity.

The Sunset Ritual: As the day fades, the ritual becomes the walk towards Kamini. Following the coastal path as the sun begins its slow descent is a sensory experience that stays with you. The sky turns into a canvas of orange, violet and gold, reflecting off the stone walls of the villas lining the path. By the time you reach the small fishing harbor of Kamini, the light has turned the sea into liquid bronze. It is the most romantic hour on the island and a time when the “Eternal Light” of Hydra truly earns its name.

The Hidden Corner | The Path to Mandraki

While most visitors congregate around the main port, my heart belongs to the path that leads towards Mandraki. It is my favorite route on the island because it is a seaside promenade that offers a constant dialogue with the water. This walk is a kaleidoscope of alternating images where on one side you have the dramatic rocky coastline and the endless blue, while on the other you find hidden villas tucked away in lush gardens and small secret coves. The view is constantly shifting and offering new perspectives of the island’s rugged beauty. It is a walk that invites reflection and a path where the beauty of the landscape acts as a balm for the soul.

By the time you reach the golden sands of Mandraki, you feel completely attuned to the island’s unique rhythm.

The Soul’s True North

Hydra is not for everyone. It is for the seekers, the aesthetes and those who understand that the greatest luxury is not found in more, but in the right things. It is an island that demands you leave your baggage, both literal and emotional, behind.

As I sit on a stone bench overlooking the Saronic Gulf and watching the white sails of a distant yacht catch the late afternoon breeze, I am reminded once again why this island is my sanctuary. Hydra does not just show you its beauty. Hydra invites you to become part of it. It is a place of eternal light, timeless elegance and a soul that remains stubbornly and beautifully unchanged.

This is my Hydra. This is my Edit.
